One way to become more familiar with firearms is to understand their basic components and some of the terminology you’ll commonly hear when discussing gunsmithing.
The Foundation of a Firearm: 3 Core Parts
While firearms differ considerably in design, most can be understood by looking at three basic components…
The action is the mechanical portion of a firearm responsible for functions such as loading, firing, extracting, and ejecting ammunition, depending on the firearm’s design.
The barrel is the metal tube through which the projectile travels after the firearm is fired. Its design and construction can vary depending on the type of firearm.
Depending on the firearm, you’ll find either a stock or a frame. A stock provides support and helps the shooter position a long gun against the shoulder. A frame is the structural component that houses or supports many of a handgun’s internal components and provides the foundation for the grip.
Common Firearm Features
You may also be familiar with several other basic components:
- Trigger: The component that initiates the firing sequence when properly operated.
- Trigger guard: A protective structure surrounding the trigger that helps stop unintended contact.
- Front and rear sights: Mechanical pieces that help align the firearm with the intended target.
- Muzzle: The front end of the barrel where the bullet exits. (When you hear someone say “muzzle down,” this is the piece they’re referencing)
- Grip: The portion of the firearm designed to be held by the shooter’s hand.
Firearms can also have safety mechanisms or locking systems that vary by model and design. If you believe one of these features requires inspection or repair, have the firearm evaluated by a qualified professional rather than attempting a repair yourself.
Types Of Firearm Materials
Firearm materials vary by design, use, and manufacturer.
Carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum alloys are commonly used in components such as barrels, frames, and other internal or structural parts.
Walnut and maple hardwoods have long been used for firearm stocks and can provide both sturdiness and visual appeal.
Modern firearms may also incorporate synthetic polymers and other high-strength composites, which can reduce weight while maintaining the durability needed for their intended application.
